Making your big garden more manageable: top tips

When viewing properties to become your forever home, a large garden is often seen as a plus point. However, they can be challenging to look after if you let them get away from you. So, here are a few top tips to help you make your big garden more manageable.

Choose the right plants

Some plants are much easier to manage than others. When thinking about making your garden more manageable, assess the plants you already have and consider whether they take too much time and upkeep. You also need to think carefully about the amount of sunlight you get in your garden as to whether the plants you choose can actually survive in there. If you like your garden to look bright throughout the year, be sure to pick easy-care evergreens. You could add them to borders or put them in pots. Rather than decide on flowers, why not go for hedges and shrubs as they need a lot less maintenance yet still look attractive.

Leave some wildness

Wild areas are really popular these days. Knowing the importance of bees, in particular, many people choose to spread wild meadow flowers in their garden and allow them to take over, providing a sanctuary. Taking this approach means you have to get your head around having an area that isn’t going to look as tidy as your garden might once have been. However, it will grow on you, especially when you can see wildlife enjoying it. A wilderness area is a perfect place to add a hammock with a hammock stand and relax.

Prepare your beds properly before planting

Flower beds can look stunning. However, pesky weeds can take so much time and effort to keep on top of. If you prepare the beds properly before planting, this will significantly reduce the amount of work you will have to do in order to stop weeds from taking over. Putting down a membrane can really help and then covering with a layer of mulch.

Consider replacing your grass

Replacing your grass with turf is not an option that should be considered lightly. However, for people with mobility issues, mowing a lawn can be a huge undertaking. Taking that aspect of a garden away, replacing it with a luscious green turf lawn that is green and immaculate all year round could be a good solution. Do be aware that this can have a negative effect on the environment with it being more of a challenge for rainwater to go anywhere as, rather than soaking into the earth, it runs off the plastic.

Create sections

We often do have flower beds and a lawn in a garden, but creating smaller sections can make a large garden much more manageable. Think about making a large dining area with a patio, built-in barbecue and dining furniture, for example, with a chiminea. A firepit is another consideration. Some people even choose to dedicate an area of their garden to fitness. While it might not look as attractive as a rockery, it can be practical, useful and great use of space.
