Have you read my blog post on how to update your rented kitchen without upsetting your landlord? Well this time around, I’m sharing ideas on how you can update the bathroom in your rented accommodation, without causing damage to the property. All of the hacks below are renter-friendly, meaning your landlord or letting agency shouldn’t have a problem with you using the techniques. Just be sure to restore the property to its original state before ending your tenancy.
If you’re ready to find out how you can transform your rented bathroom into a cool, relaxing, and more practical area of your home, keep reading.

Lay down some temporary bathroom flooring
Sometimes bathrooms in rented accommodation lack character. They’re usually pretty cold and uninviting, but a quick way to change this is to lay down some temporary flooring. There are a couple of options for this, depending on the style you want to go for. If intricate tiling is your thing, vinyl flooring is a game-changer. With so much choice in terms of patterns and colours, vinyl flooring is an inexpensive way to completely change the entire bathroom vibe. It’s also incredibly easy to lay and remove at the end of your tenancy.
Another temporary bathroom floor option that I love is wood effect vinyl planking. If you’re looking to create a warm and cosy bathroom environment, wood effect planking is a great choice. Not only does it look beautiful, but it is also hardwearing and water-resistant. Wood planking is more expensive than vinyl flooring that you simply lay down and cut to size, however, it is tougher and longer-lasting.
Create an eye-catching sink splashback area with adhesive tiles
I talked about removable wallpaper in my Renter Friendly Kitchen Hacks post, and I’m going to mention something similar now. Did you know that, as well as removable wallpaper, you can also purchase removable tiles? The tiles work in the same way as the wallpaper and are water-resistant and moisture-proof, making them a great splashback design option for your bathroom sink.
Install some command hook shower shelves
Shower shelves are the bane of any renter’s world when it comes to bathroom storage. Often there’s little storage available in rented accommodation, and this issue isn’t helped when landlords refuse to let tenants screw holes into the walls. Instead of worrying about drilling holes into tiles and then trying to cover them up again later, use bathroom proof command hook strips to hold up your in-shower shelves.
Creating an oasis of calm by using ceiling hooks for hanging plants
Want to create a tropical paradise? Install some ceiling hooks and use them to hang your favourite moisture-loving plants. Lots of plants tolerate high humidity levels, including the much loved Snake Plant, and other popular and pretty choices such as the trailing Golden Pothos, and the iconic Monstera.
Bling your mirror up with your favourite trim and some velcro
Rented accommodation doesn’t usually win awards for fancy accessories, and usually, bathroom mirrors are just regular rectangular mirrors screwed into the bathroom wall. It’s all a bit boring, isn’t it? If you want to make your bathroom mirror look grander, find some of your favourite wooden trim and cut it to size – feel free to paint it too. Once it’s to your liking, add some velcro on either end of your trim and position velcro in each corner of your mirror. Simply attach the wooden frame to your mirror, then remove all traces of velcro before you move out.
Update your shower curtain
Lastly, don’t forget to update your shower curtain. I’m convinced that the choice of shower curtain says a lot about a person, so choose something that suits your personality.
