If you have an allergy, you know how important it is to avoid the allergen at all costs. But did you know there are things you can do around the home to keep it clean and avoid triggers too? Here are some top tips.

Are you allergic to more than one thing?
The first step in preventing allergic reactions is to actually know what you are allergic to. If you are a little unsure it is harder to avoid them, especially within the home. Whilst these tips should help I would always advise you to get allergy testing done as soon as possible to ensure that you know what the allergies are too and can prevent reactions before they happen! You can get allergy testing done through your GP but there are also home allergy testing kits available online.
Delegate
If there are more people than just you in the house, it is a wise idea to delegate chores. Certain chores can trigger allergies too – dusting may dislodge dust mites as may vacuuming. By delegating chores to someone else, you can avoid causing an allergic reaction.
Have Easy To Clean Items
Items such as carpets, rugs and curtains can harbour all manners of allergens, no matter how clean you think they are. Better options in this instance are blinds as you can clean in between the different shutters or wooden floors as it is easier to vacuum them or mop up spills.
Wash Your Bedding Regularly
You should be washing your bedding regularly anyway but if you have an allergy, you should ensure you are washing them at least weekly in hot water to remove many of the common irritants that you can find in the home. Tumble dry or hang your bedding inside as hanging it outside can attract more irritants.
Vacuum Often
Everyone has their own housework calendar. Some do every chore every single day, some have set days each week. However, you should ensure you are vacuuming at least every other day, perhaps more if your allergen is something like dust mites or bugs which can easily make their way into the home.
Avoid Clutter
Having plenty of clutter around can be a breeding ground for allergens. They can trap bugs and dust mites so get rid of as much clutter as you possibly can.
Avoid Scented Products
Many scented products can trigger an allergic reaction. It is something to do with the fragrances used. Scented products include cleaners, detergents, air fresheners and candles among other things. It is best to opt for fragrance-free products instead. Choose unscented and non-biological products for washing your clothing too as these can be a large trigger.
Check Labels On Your Cleaning Products
It is also important to read the different labels on your cleaning products. Just because it seems like it might be okay doesn’t mean it actually is. Many products have synthetic chemicals in them which can often trigger allergies too. You can choose all-natural products without any of these synthetic chemicals or you could even try to make your own.
Take Steps To Reduce Allergens At Every Turn
My last tip for cleaning around the home with allergies is to take steps to reduce allergens before they even make it into your home. Get your family and visitors to remove their shoes at the door, clean your doorways regularly, avoid smoking inside and clean up after any pets regularly.
I hope these cleaning tips are helpful to you, especially if you have an allergy that is often triggered around your home. By trying some of these out, you will hopefully be able to reduce your chances of triggering an allergic reaction.
